The Children’s Room offers grief support services
Navigating the grieving process after the loss of a parent or sibling can be an isolating and challenging experience for children. Finding the proper emotional support can be difficult, especially when primary caregivers are also dealing with their grief, lack of resources, or financial constraints. That’s where The Children’s Room steps in. This incredible non-profit organization offers critical grief support services at no cost, thanks in part to funding from compassionate companies like Mortgage Equity Partners (MEP).
Based in Arlington, Massachusetts, The Children’s Room has helped hundreds of families since its founding in 1993. This non-profit organization provides a safe, empathetic space for children, teens, and families navigating the complexities of grief. The organization emphasizes compassionate connection and shared experiences to foster natural healing.
The Children’s Room focuses on creating an environment where children can express their feelings freely and without judgment. Through peer support groups, educational workshops, and professional guidance, young individuals find their voices and rebuild their worlds. According to the 2024 Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), 1 in 13 children in Massachusetts will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18, underscoring the vital need for these services.
The Children’s Room programs are designed to meet the developmental and emotional needs of children at various stages of grief. These activities—ranging from artistic expression to narrative sharing—serve as more than just outlets. They become pathways for deeper connections, strengthening the family unit and laying the groundwork for a hopeful future.
The Children’s Room culture and all its services reflect the following fundamental beliefs:
- Everyone experiences grief in a unique way.
- The experience of grief does not end but changes over time.
- Within each of us there is a natural capacity to adapt to a world changed by death.
- Grief is a natural and healthy response to death.
- Grief is transformative and can lead to personal growth not previously imagined.
- Being with others who have experienced a death reduces isolation and can provide hope.
Beyond its immediate services, The Children’s Room provides training and consultations for schools, communities, and clinicians. This broader reach helps to disseminate strategies for inclusive mourning and strengthens the community’s capacity to heal collectively.
Mortgage Equity Partners is not just an independent mortgage banker but a company that supports stability and building strong communities through homeownership. MEP endorses the work of The Children’s Room as it creates hope for children who will grow to be thriving members of the community. Sean Riley, president and CEO of MEP says, “I am personally deeply passionate about the mission of The Children’s Room and being the largest independent mortgage bank headquartered in MA we are of course very invested in the well-being of our local communities. The Children’s Room provides crucial support and resources for grieving children, teens, and families, helping them navigate the challenges of loss and build resilience. By partnering with this impactful organization, we can directly contribute to the emotional and mental well-being of our neighbors, fostering a stronger, more compassionate community. Supporting such initiatives not only reflects our values but also strengthens our ties to the community we call home.”
